Basic Basketball Passing Drills

The goal of these basketball passing drills is to help your players work on their passing and catching skills and fundamentals. These passing drills will also help them improve their eye-hand coordination and peripheral vision...all needed to become a great passer.

Throughout each basketball passing drill, emphasize to your players the importance of making quick, accurate passes to their teammates. Also emphasize the importance of giving the passer a good target to pass the basketball to and making good catches.

Circle Passing Drill

Players will be in groups of five and position themselves at one of the jump ball circles - standing one step outside the circle.

The players will quickly and accurately pass the basketball across the circle to a teammate. Players should catch the basketball and quickly pass to another teammate across the circle. Have your players switch between the chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass and one-hand bounce pass.

Circle Passing Drill 2

Players will be in groups of five and position themselves at one of the jump ball circles - standing one step outside the circle.

The players will quickly and accurately pass the basketball around the outside of the circle to a teammate. Players should catch the basketball, pivot and turn to face the player next to them and quickly make the pass. Have your players switch between the chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass and one-hand bounce pass.

Rapid Fire Passing Drill

Players will be in groups of six with two basketballs. Player #1 will stand at the free throw line with a basketball facing their teammates. The other players will face player #1 and position themselves in a semi-circle formation. One player in the group will have a basketball, player #2.

Players #1 will start the drill by making a chest pass to any player in the group. As player #1 makes their pass, player #2 will make a chest pass to player #1. As player #1 makes their pass, they should immediately be ready to receive one. This passing action is continued with player #1 passing back and forth with each member of the group.

You should emphasize to your players the importance of making short, quick, accurate passes, using good vision to see the basketball, being alert and making good catches.

Monkey In The Middle Passing Drill

Players will spread out around the gym in groups of three, with one basketball per group. To start this basketball drill there will be two passers facing each other about 12 feet apart and one defender positioned between them. The defender should position themselves about two feet from the player with the basketball.

The offensive players will use a variety of basketball passes including the chest pass, bounce pass and one-hand bounce pass. The passers cannot use the overhead pass and cannot take more than one step to either side.

The offensive players will work on making good ball fakes and quick, accurate passes. While the defender will try to steal or deflect the passes. After 30 seconds the players will switch positions.

Three Man Passing Drill

Players will form three lines on the baseline, with each line about 15 feet apart. The players will work in groups of three. This drill will focus on having your players run down the court while passing the basketball back and forth between lines.

The player in the middle line will have the basketball to start this drill. The three players will run down the court while passing the basketball in the following manner - Middle player to right player back to middle player to left player back to middle player and repeat.

The players must focus on making quick, accurate passes while moving down the court, and must also concentrate on catching the basketball while on the move.

*Special Note* - During these basketball drills, it's important that your players focus on catching just as much as passing the basketball. Remember, in order for passes to be effective, players must be able to catch them. Otherwise...it's just a turnover.
